Starting the details

Statement 2016

I seek compelling gestures to fit abstract ideas. The design of the animal ambiguously demonstrates emotion through form and gesture, provoking an intriguing interaction between it and the viewer. My visual ideas start in the studio and are further explored with live animals. I discover the physical and psychological characteristics of the individual that speak to the initial ideas, whether they are actually inherent in the individual or my projection of who they are. They help to define my final works.

Real Skeletal Articulation

I got a real skeletan to articulate.  It was a good learning experience and I will use him as a teaching aid.  Here are some pics throughout the process;

This is two visits so far.  I am really excited about this one so far.  I am really moved by this animal.  We have been having a lot of conversations and he has been giving me lots ideas for potential in this piece.  I am really enjoying our conversations!

Duiker

By | In Progress/ At the Zoo | No Comments

What can I say, the duiker is a deer-like animal that has been known to eat rodents and birds!  From what I hear, these are tough little guys.  This one started as a study for a possible sculptural idea, but I am starting to like where it may be going and might start to push some ideas.  I will take a break from him and pick it up soon.

Ecorche

I am making an ecorche sculpture, with muscles on one side 32”.  It is for myself and I use it for teaching anatomy and proportion in my classes.  I am also making one of a lion…coming soon.
