Bronze Commission Sculpture For Veterinary Clinic

I learned a lot about bronze relief sculpture on this project. When the bronze is poured into the shell mold and starts to cool it doesn’t want to stay flat, it can warp.

So when you start welding it together you really have to work it. Make sure you have it clamped to a flat table, or it will warp again with the heat from the welding. But there are many tricks to getting it back the original flat shape.

Ocean State Veterinary Specialists is a state of the art, 24 hour clinic for all kinds of pets, even the exotics. I had a great time meeting everyone there.

Here are some pics and some explanations of the casting process so far.

Some thoughts,

I seek compelling gestures to fit abstract ideas. The design of the animal ambiguously demonstrates emotion through form and gesture, provoking an intriguing interaction between it and the viewer.

Animals simply exist. They don’t require meaning. They are fully immerged in the present moment. Humans nominalize and intellectualize in a search for meaning where the true essence and beauty lie on an entirely separate plane.

I had to cut the sculpture into 7 pieces to make for a more efficient mold. So I removed the head, tail and 4 legs, to cast them separately. It hurt me to do it, but it had to be done.

At this point he is put back together, but he still needs to be cleaned up and painted

It’s been fun and exhausting at the same time.

Preparation For Colorado Show 2010

For the next month I will be driving cross-country, participating in the “Sculpture In The Park” sculpture show in Loveland Colorado, it is from August 6-8th 2010. There will be 170 sculptors world wide. It will be a great experience meeting other sculptors and people at the event. Kristi Kineslla will be my artist representative and photographer for the show. She will also be building a gallery of images, throughout the states.

While out west I will be taking advantage of this opportunity to explore the art scenes out there, as well as the bronze foundries. The journey begins exploring Colorado for about 7 days. Then proceeding south to Santa Fe, NM for another 5-6 days. I hear from a lot of different artists that Santa Fe is the second largest art scene in the country, under NYC, so I would like to see it for myself. From New Mexico we will be meeting up with my good friend and cousin in Hollywood, CA. It will be exciting catching up with them and exploring the California art scene for about 2-3 weeks. On my way home I will be stopping in Charleston SC to visit my sister and finally visiting the museums in Washington DC.

So I have been locked in the studio all summer trying to finish all my sculptures for this show. I am bringing 8 sculptures and some are multi-figured. It has been challenging and taken a lot of sacrifice, but that’s whatit’s all about. This African Elephant sculpture is part of a composition with the White Rhino sculpture I had started in 2009. I have been busy with other projects but I finally have finished them. Here are some pictures of the casting process of the elephant and some of the other sculptures I am bringing.
